Prep Q&A: Schober leads by example for Spencer

Spencer senior Jenna Schober has played a big part in the Rockets volleyball season so far this year.

SPENCER - As one of eight seniors on the Spencer volleyball team, Jenna Schober is by default one of its leaders. She also happens to be one of the Rockets' top hitters on a team that is gunning for a fifth straight Cloverbelt Conference championship.

The Rockets are currently 5-0 with three conference matches to play and Schober has been a big part of the team's success according to coach Buff Heller.

"Jenna is one of our top hitters, but she also played in the back row and her serving has been very good this year. She's a nice player to have on your team," Heller said. "She plays all out all the time and she's one of those players that never comes off the court.

"The senior class has put a lot of effort into what we have going this year and she's always positive. It takes a lot to get her flustered and I think that's part of her leadership by example style."

What do you credit your 5-0 conference and 18-7 overall record with? Our serve receive has been spot on and we're smart with our attack. I think we're a pretty balanced team. And we are super close and we all get along well.

Three more Cloverbelt wins and your team would five straight conference titles. What would that mean to you and the other seniors? It would be an awesome accomplishment to keep that streak going. As seniors it would mean a lot. We've helped with the last three and we're proud to have been part of that.

How much time does it take for your setters to know where to put the ball for you to spike? I like the ball close to the net and both Sadie (Mercier) and McKenzie (Bainer) are both great at placing the ball. I've played with McKenzie for all four years and Sadie came in last year and learned right away where to set the ball for me and our other hitters.

What don't the boys at school understand about volleyball? They think we just pass and hit the ball. They don't realize how fast the ball is coming at you and how precise you have to hit the ball to keep it in the court.

What is your biggest fear? Drowning. I love swimming, I just couldn't imagine drowning.

What are some things you want to accomplish before you are 30: Graduate college and veterinary school, have a family and lots of cats. I'm going to UW-River Falls and then I'll transfer to Madison for vet school. I've had a love for animals since I was little so I knew for a while that I wanted to be a vet.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you: I'm actually supposed to be a junior because I skipped the second grade. I'm young for my class. I'm 16, but I turn 17 on Saturday. My teachers in kindergarten and first grade told my parents that my reading level and other skills at that age were crazy good. The teachers said I could skip second grade and that's what my parents decided to do.
